Prop 65 & Regulatory Compliance

Arts and Crafts Materials and Regulatory Compliance

Prop 65 & Regulatory Compliance

Officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, Proposition 65 requires businesses to provide warnings to Californians about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.

These chemicals can be in consumer products, building materials, industrial equipment and supplies, essentially any product sold in the State of California whether it's used in the home or workplace.

"Significant exposure" is determined by comparison of the dose of a chemical someone might receive as compared to the Safe Harbor levels promulgated under Proposition 65.  Calculating those doses for comparison to safe harbor levels requires a strong understanding of how a product is used and how someone might be exposed to the chemicals in that product.  ToxRisk Consulting offers that level of understanding.

Proposition 65 requires California to publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, has grown to include approximately 900 chemicals since it was first published in 1987.

ToxRisk Consulting can deliver:

  • Prop 65 Compliance strategies
  • Exposure assessment and safe harbor evaluations
  • Safe harbor level derivation
  • Product line evaluations
  • Selection of testing laboratories

Health Risk Assessment

Arts and Crafts Materials and Regulatory Compliance

Prop 65 & Regulatory Compliance

Health risk assessment is more than following a set of prescribed calculations in agency guidance, and TRC avoids the use of generic, highly conservative methodologies that often raise more questions than they answer.

A TRC risk assessment draws on many scientific disciplines to create a rational basis for managing the risks associated with a contaminated site, a chemical product, or an industrial activity. To do so, TRC maintains a broad base of associate scientists and engineers experienced in Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment, Toxicology, Environmental Chemistry, Chemical Fate and Transport Modeling, Statistics, and Remediation.

Our objective in each risk assessment project is to integrate the latest scientific data and methodologies, site-specific information, and common sense. Our goal with each project is a rational and technically defensible basis for environmental decision-making, which results in protection of human health and the environment at a reasonable cost.
